Dutch Interior – Play the Song

Southern California six-piece Dutch Interior release “Play the Song”, their first new music since this year’s acclaimed album “Moneyball”. The band comprises Conner Reeves, Hayden Barton, Shane Barton, Jack Nugent, Noah Kurtz, and Davis Stewart, most of whom have known each other since childhood.

Recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, the track came from the band’s interest in repetition and memory. Songwriter Noah Kurtz wrote it about songs that grab you in unexplainable ways. “Maybe it’s an unhealthy attachment or indulgence but you just have to put that shit on repeat until you can’t anymore,” he explains.

The production layers pianos and acoustic guitars softly around Kurtz’s quiet vocals. Conner Reeves produced the track, with engineering by Korey Loberg and mixing by Phil Ek. Greg Obis handled mastering. The initial demo had been abandoned until it was picked back up in the studio and reworked with a new context.

Dutch Interior blends ambient, slowcore, experimental folk, and southern rock into something both cohesive and searching. Pitchfork called “Moneyball” their “most wide-ranging, thoughtfully realised album, leaving the band’s own pins across the map of the American songwriting tradition.”

The band heads out on a North American tour soon, opening for Water From Your Eyes on some dates and co-headlining with Font on others.
